Datsun redi-Go is ready to enter into the now crowded entry level car segment in India. It offers with an AMT option.

Nissan-owned Japanese carmaker Datsun today unveiled India’s first compact urban cross – redi-GO. The car will launch in June with the familiar 53 bhp, 799cc engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Datsun has confirmed that the car is powered by a 0.8-liter three cylinder petrol engine, although they haven’t revealed the power output. The car is claimed to offer a good response from the engine, but exact power outputs will be revealed closer to its launch.

The relationship between the alliance partners entails that the Kwid gets its own free-run on the AMT USP before Datsun can also offer it. So expect the redi-GO AMT to only arrive in the last quarter of this fiscal. Renault-Nissan will look to offer class leading mileage figures with the AMT variant. Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 offers the AMT as well, but it is not an option on the entry-level Alto 800.

Datsun is positioned as a low-cost brand in the Renault-Nissan Alliance; the redi-GO is expected to be priced even lower than the Renault Kwid. To what extent is anybody’s guess, but if it’s priced below the Renault’s Kwid’s launch price of INR 2.56 Lakh (ex-showroom), it’s bound to raise some much-needed attention towards the fledgling brand.
