Suzuki’s premium hatchback segment vehicle Baleno has attained a three-star rating in crash tests with standard equipment by the European automobile safety agency NCAP, and a four-star rating for safety pack for its global model. A 3 star rating means “average to good”. The Dummy readings as per the test suggests the following :

The occupant protection is average but lacks crash avoidance technology.
The passenger compartment of Suzuki Baleno remained stable in the frontal offset test.
Indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger.
In the full-width rigid barrier impact, protection of the driver was rated as good except for the chest, protection of which was adequate.
Dummy readings of chest compression indicated marginal protection, but good or adequate protection for other parts of the body.

In the side barrier test :
showed good protection but the score for the head was penalised as the side curtain airbag was deemed not to have deployed in the correct manner in the side pole test.

In the more severe side pole impact – rib compression indicated weak chest protection and the head protection was downgraded to adequate as a result of the incorrect airbag deployment.

The front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision. The rear seats also indicated good protection.

However, a four-star rating to the optional Suzuki Baleno fitted with safety pack of radar brake support.

The Japanese firm Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Baleno vehicles are manufactured in India to meet the local market sales on a large scale. In the recent months, in India Maruti Suzuki has systematically introduced the enhanced safety equipments like Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD as standard features in certain models. An option has been offered across all the variants of most of the models. Small car model Alto comes with a driver Airbag option in all the variants.

Last month, the company had launched the premium hatch Suzuki Baleno in the Japanese market. It is for the first time that Maruti Suzuki India made model is being exported to Japan where SMC is based. In India, Maruti had launched Baleno in the last year itself which is being manufactured at the company’s Manesar plant.
