Hyderabad, June 19: Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) is working with drug manufactures in the country to reduce the import of life-saving drugs and to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of drugs.

In order to reduce the import of life-save drugs, Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) is working with domestic drug makers to develop at least 12 life-saving drugs each year. A newly appointed director of IICT, S.Chandrasekhar said in the presence of press meet that “We are actively working with domestic drug makers in the country to accomplish self-sufficiency in the production of at least 12 life-saving drugs. Key efforts for making drugs have already begun”.

According to IICT, India is currently importing most of the drugs from China, in the last four financial years, India imported Rs. 38,186 worth full drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Director of IICT said that, developing of 12 game-changing technologies in India is committed to progress in the national missions like like Swachh Bharat, Swasthya Bharat, Skill India, Smart Cities, Digital India and Namami Ganga.

IICT is targeted to make most essential medicines including paracetamol, paracetamol, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and anti-diabetics. Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) institutes is also agreed to develop at least 12 life-saving drugs every year in their 38 labs.

IICT is also planning to set up a cell for regular interaction with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments, to know that how the technologies could be translated and made relevant to people.
