Chennai, July 4: Not even a single student admitted for current academic year under the Right to Education RTE Act in Chennai for more than 150 elementary and matriculation schools.

As per the latest data of Tamil Nadu Directorate of Matriculation schools, more than 150 elementary and matriculation schools in the city have not admitted a single student for current academic year under RTE Act. In Chennai there are total 304 matriculation and 289 elementary schools, out of which 60 matriculation schools and 97 elementary schools have not admitted even with single student, the entry level intake of students itself was nil.

As per data, under RTE quota elementary schools in the state have filled with less than 50 percent of seats and matriculation schools filled with 63.56 percent seats.

Prominent education activist PB Prince Gajendra Babu, has required reason about why have these seats not been filled? On this issue some of the schools are showing zero intake and some big schools have shown only 30 seats at their intake capacity at Lower Kindergarten (LKG) level.

Directorate of Matriculation Schools R Pitchai said that, notice will be sent soon to respective school which have failed to admit students under the RTE and the notice. Madras High Court had ordered the school education department to display the number of available seats under the RTE quota on its website; following this the data was made public.
