Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a constitutional body in India. It is authorized to conduct competitive examinations and interviews for recruitment of civil services, defence services and posts under the Union Government or Central Government. Recently the UPSC made an announcement of UPSC Civil Services Notification 2016. A large number of interested candidates applied for it and authority is going to conduct prelims exam.

As per news, the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination is scheduled to conduct on August 7, 2016. All eligible candidates who had successfully applied for the post can go through the UPSC Civil Services Prelims Syllabus 2016 Exam pattern for better preparation to crack the exam.

The Union Public Service Commission organizes the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2016 for those candidates who applied for Civil Services Examination and Indian Forest Service Examination. The Prelims exam acts as a selection mechanism for selection of aspirants for the Civil Services (Main) Examination and Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination.

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination consists of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions) i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2 and carry maximum of 400 marks, each 200 Marks. This exam is only a screening test; the marks obtained in the prelims are only for qualifying for main exam.

Syllabus of Paper-1 (200 Marks)

  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political.
  • Economic and Social Development-Sustainable.
  • Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social.
  • Geography of India and the World.
  • System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.

Syllabus of Paper-2 (200 Marks)

  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
