First Artificial Cell Membrane Designed by Indian Scientist Neal Devaraj

June 25: Indian Scientist and professor at the University of California Neal Devaraj designed the first artificial cell membrane, which is capable of sustain continuous growth as a living cell.

A team which is run by an Indian American Scientist has successfully designed the first artificial cell membrane which has a capable of sustain continual growth as a living cell. The team has designed a complete synthetic and artificial cell which as the ability to respond to the environmental signs.

Indian American scientist Neal Devaraj who is a professor at the University of California in San Diego said that “the membranes that we created, though completely synthetic, mimic several features of more complex living organisms, such as the ability to adapt their composition in response to environmental cues.”

As per team, so far no other scientist has developed persistent phospholipid membrane formation, to develop a growing membrane, the team has substituted a complex network of biochemical pathways which are used in nature with a single autocatalyst and it will help the cell simultaneous growth. The total system continually transforms simpler, higher-energy building blocks into new artificial membranes.

The new Synthetic cell membranes, which can grow like real membranes are an important new tool for synthetic biology and origin of life studies. The other UCSD researchers Michael Hardy, Jun Yang, Christian Cole, Jangir Selimkhanov, and Lev Tsimring are also there in the study of research.
