Udhayanidhi’s Gethu was released for Pongal. The movie was produced by Red Giant Movies banner. To get the tax exemption, a request was made to Tamilnadu Government. But Tamilnadu Government ordered that they can’t avail the tax benefit as the title Gethu is not a Tamil word.

But Udhayanidhi filed a case in Chennai High Court. Judge Mahadevan inquired and he said that the film comes in Tamilians holy book Thirupugazh. But the Tamil Nadu Government lawyer said that in Thirupughal there are 33 other language words and the movie title is one such word.

The Tamil Research Department has said the movie name is not a Tamil word. They also claimed that in Chennai University dictionary there is no such word. Judge Duraisamy heard both the side arguments and gave the judgment in favor of Udhayanidhi Stalin.

He said as it’s written in English we can’t come to an end that it is not a Tamil word. He also said in Tamilnadu word, Tamil should be read as ‘Thamil’. And after lots of heated arguments, the judge finally said, Gethu is a Tamil word and it can avail the tax exemption benefits.
