For Women and By Women – An Innovative Cab Service in Gurgaon

The district admin is planning to start Gurgaon women only cab service, which will be driven by female drivers only as they propose to start the service in the coming 100 days, with a convoy of 50 Tata Nano cars.

This ‘women-only’ facility is being started to restrain the past incidents happened of annoyance and other crimes towards women. The district admin will also help the interested women to buy and run this cab overhaul. For this, it has asked the RUDSET society to identify such women or girls, who are willing to own and run the ‘women-only’ cabs, and train them therefore.

“We are likely to start this service soon and I am hoping that we will be able to start with 50-odd cabs in the next 100 days. I have suggested that the colour of the cab be pink. While on the one hand, it will help in generating employment avenues for the educated but unemployed women, on the other hand, it will help in controlling crime against women,” the deputy commissioner T L Satyaprakash told TOI.

He continued by saying, “The cab service will have full police support and also a dress code for women drivers. It will also have a helpline, where in case of an emergency the woman driver or the passenger can contact and ask for help. With consensus, the women can coin a specialized name for the cab service.”

Actually, this service will be made handy by four agencies, the district admin, RUDSET institution, Tata Motors and over the banks. A district administration spokesperson said, “According to the proposal, after identification of willing women drivers, the institute will train those for 21 days in soft skills and the venue of training will be provided by Tata Motors, which has also promised to provide Nano cabs.”

In accordance with him, the scheme to begin this cab service was initial mooted last week when Satyaprakash attended a training programme. He felt it would be an successful step as a measure to control crime against women. The district admin will support the trained women drivers in getting the drivers’ licence, getting the vehicles registered and ask banks to liberate the loans for purchasing these cabs, in his view he said.
