The second most well know female play black singer in Hindi Cinema Asha Bhosle is celebrating her 82 birthday today. She is probably sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshwar. She started her career in 1943 and she has been singing professionally over six decades. As a highly regarded Hindi playback singer, she has sung over 12,000 songs in more than 950 Bollywood movies.
Ashaji was born as Asha Mangeshkar on September 8, 1933 in a village of Goar in Maharashtra into a Brahmin household. Her father was Dinanath Mangeshkar and her mother was Shudhmati, she has three sisters Lata, Usha and Meena and one brother named Hridayanath. She is probably second only to her sister and prominent playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Ashaji started her career in 1943 with a song ‘Chala Chala Nav Bala’ for the Marathi film “Majha Bal” and her first Hindi film was Sawan Aya for ‘Chunaria’ film in 1948. She also recorded many private albums and participated in numerous performances in India and abroad.
1956 marked a major turning point in Ashaji’s career, in this year with her work for O.P Nayyar’s C.I.D, she got public attention after a number of successful songs under O.P Nayyar, she became ond of the favourite singer to public and she maintained that over six decades.
Aside from Hindi film, Ashaji also quite active in Marathi films, she has sung in many languages including Assamese, Urdu, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, English and many more.
