India’s first double hand transplantation is successful by the rare feat done by Kochi doctors in a private hospital.
Doctors in the private hospital of Kochi have registered a rare feat by double hand transplantation in India and are successful in doing so.
Amrita Institute of Medical Science, Kochi is the place where they have conducted the surgery on 12th, 13th January.
The 30-year-old train accident victim is happy to have his both hands after 6 years. He is fortunate enough to have his hands back and the operation is successful.
First transplantation is done at France 13 years ago. So far, 110 successful hand transplants have been conducted in the US, European countries, China and Australia.
Subramania Iyer, professor and head of the plastic surgery department noted the above points in a meeting conducted.
He also said, “Fourteen days after surgery, both the hands were accepted by the recipient’s body and he started regaining movements. He has been shifted out of the intensive care unit and the post-surgical rehabilitation process has started”.
Hand Transplantation in India
To the young man of 30 year old train accident victim, the operation was conducted by more than 20 surgeons that lasted for 16 hours continuously.
After the operation , the doctor said, “He will be able to move his hands since his own muscles of the forearm are working to move the fingers”.
“The sensations will return only slowly and is expected in three-four months. His immuno-suppressant drugs (to prevent rejection of the transplanted hands) will have to be continued indefinitely, but at a reduced rate from three months,” he added.
