Famous Tamil lyricist Thamarai made her debut in the Harris Jeyaraj musical Minnale. Songs like Vaseegara, Iru vizhi unathu, zoomed her into one of the leading Lyricist in the Tamil film industry. Her songs in Kaaka Kaaka, Vaaranam Aayiram continued to bring her laurels. Recently her song in Ennai Arinthal, Unakkenna  Venum Sollu became a super hit. She has written most of her songs for leading music directors like A.R.Rahman and Harris Jeyaraj.

Thamarai is famous for her melody based songs. Her Tamil diction is always pure and of high standards. She never stooped low for the sake of money by writing item numbers or using offensive words in her songs . According to her writing such songs will dishonor her mother tongue Tamil.

She also pointed it out that it will bring disgrace to her profession as a Tamil poetess. In Tamil film industry , lyric writing is a department dominated by males. She is the first  female lyricist to survive successfully.

The current trend of songs are mostly fast numbers, item songs and Ghana songs. But she is firm in her ways of writing songs in chaste Tamil. If the Director wants a Ghana song from her in his movie she directly tells him to use some other lyricist to write the song. Thamarai doesn’t want to compromise on the quality of songs by using foul language.
