PM Modi to head “NITI Aayog”, a Think Tank and replacement of Planning Commission that was formerly established in the year 1950. Modi is to lead the panel as Chairperson.
New Delhi: Planning Commission that was established in 1950 will be replaced by NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India). The panel will be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chairperson.
The government on Thursday, 1st Jan, 2015 had announced that the Planning Commission had been replaced with NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog.
It is with many modifications, a multi-tiered structure that includes a governing council of CMs of all states and lieutenant governors of union territories of the country.

“Having served as a CM in the past, I am very much aware of the importance of actively consulting the states. NITI Aayog does precisely that,” said Modi.
“A pro-people, proactive & participative development agenda stressing on empowerment & equality is the guiding principle behind NITI Aayog… Through NITI Aayog, we bid farewell to a ‘one size fits all’ approach towards development. The body celebrates India’s diversity & plurality,” he said.

Based on the discussions that were held on December 7, all the chief ministers of the country and the delegates decided to modify Planning Commission and replace it with think tank, “NITI Aayog”. The decision came nearly three weeks on this, where most of the members favored restructuring while others opposed disbanding of the existing set-up, finally accepted for modification.
They said that the Planning panel will be renamed at the cabinet meeting on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the Planning Commission had lost its working plans and it is the time to replace and modifying.
On the meeting held with Chief Ministers dated December 7, PM recalled former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh wording that the current structure has “no futuristic vision in the post-reform period”.
“One size fits all” approach for development will be ended as per the principles written for NITI Aayog. It is to include India’s diversity & plurality in combination.
With various policy matters and key inputs, NITI Aayog is to emerge as an active institution in the country’s development journey in the future.
