Second International Airport in Delhi – Civil Aviation Ministry

New Delhi, June 26: The National capital Delhi may have second airport, which handled over 40 million passengers with the proposal of Civil Aviation Ministry.

The ministry of Civil Aviation has approved a proposal for setting up a second airport at the National Capital Region. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said that, the GMR Group, which operates existing Indira Gandhi International Airport Ltd, would be preferred for developing the new one.

The new project is waiting for an approval from UP government, officials will soon send a proposal to the Cabinet for approval. Once the project gets the necessary approvals from the government then after the civil aviation ministry will give the contract to GMR Group. The decision about new airport was taken during a high-level meeting in the presence of Civil Aviation Secretary Rajeev Nayan Choubey, Air India CMD Rohit Nandan, Airports Authority of India Chairman R K Srivastava and other officials along with Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma.

Sharma said that “We have decided to develop a second airport in the National Capital Region to reduce both pollution and air traffic at the Delhi Airport”.

As per officials the new proposed airport will be provided for both domestic and international traffic and facility would also undertake cargo operations. 2,000 acres of land was already available for the project.

As per sources, approval from the UP government for a new airport at NCR is still expected.
