September 16 – World Ozone Day | Be Cautious About Environment

September 16 is considered as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer to save the earth from environmental degradation.

In1994, UN General Assembly declared that September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer after Montreal Protocol signed 24 UN member nations in 1987 to reduce manmade chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons CFCs and other 95 ozone-depleting materials.

Ozone layer is the Earth’s upper atmosphere acts as sunscreen for the Earth and human being, it protects the earth from harmful UV radiations. If any damage occurred for this, it could have serious biological consequences including increased risks of skin cancer.

In the year of 1980 Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol has discovered the hole to Ozone layer, then it signed with the 24 UN member nations to reducing the Ozone –depleting materials. Since 1994, September 16th is considered as the World Ozone Day to mark the date the Montreal Protocol was signed. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Vienna convention.

Controlling the uses of Ozone depleting substances not only helped to protect the Ozone layer for this and future generation, it also contributed significantly for climate change. Ozone layer is protecting the human health and ecosystem by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiations from reaching the earth.

This year World Ozone Day is marked as the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. This year it is celebrated as “30 years of healing the ozone together.” With a slogan, “Ozone: All there is between you and UV” to mark the both 30th anniversary and world Ozone Day.
