New Delhi, May 19: Special Ganga Protection Law may launch soon which instigate polluting the Ganga River an illegal offence. A National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) report.
Govt of India Clean Ganga mission implementing agency NMCG reported that they are planning to implement a law according to which polluting the river Ganges will be made an illegal offence. Along with NMCG, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation are working on this special law.
To implement this new legislation, a special inter-ministerial committee has been formed. NMCG also focused on a need of special law which includes both penalty and civil provisions. They told this during a presentation which apparently didn’t elucidate the accurate nature of the punishing provisions.
Till now, the ministry received four drafts on this purposed law. First was send by Indian Institute of Technology and others from separate groups. This special Ganga Protection Law may discussed in the state Govt level later.
NMCG has been allocated with Rs. 20,000 crore for this Clean Ganga project till 2020. According to officials, out of total, Rs. 7,272 crore will be utilized for on-going projects and remaining for some upcoming projects.
NMCG officials said in its report that, “In a departure from the Ganga Action Plans of the past that saw several treatment plants languishing, under Namami Gange the Centre will provide 100% funding for infrastructure creation and additionally will also provide for operation and maintenance costs of the assets for a minimum of ten years.”
