Telangana State New Law to Check Sham Marriages

Telangana: A new law of implementation to avoid fake marriages in the State of Telangana is to start in few days. In case of marrying a girl, a foreigner needs to fill NOC (No Objection Certificate) form from his respective embassy.

A new law is announced in Telangana State to avoid fake marriages. If any foreign national wants to get married to Telangana girl need to fill a form by accepting all conditions before such a ceremony is solemnized. The primary requirement for their marriage is NOC (No Objection Certificate) from his respective embassy followed by city police or the respective district collector.

The state government has started this mission with the vision of protecting of minor girls being married off to aged foreign nationals especially from the Gulf. For this government has passed a tough law to check contract and dubious marriages.

This new law is primarily aimed to end fake marriages in the state. It is mainly for the people in the Old City area of Hyderabad. So, now all foreign nationals who want to marry Telangana Girl should fill the NOC Form. They need to apply for NOC certificate at least one month before the ceremony. Then local police will verify whether bride has attained age of 18 years to be major. The marriage ceremony will be celebrated only after police clearances whether bride agrees to marriage or not and after collecting all necessary documents from bridegroom.

Recently a 70-years-old Omani national married a 15-years old girl of Old city based on contract. City Police noticed this and arrested that person named Sheikh Khamis Mohammed Khamis and reportedly paid Rs. 1 lakh to girl’s parents for the marriage.

Police has been booking several such types of cases every year under various sections of Indian Penal Code. Usually bride parents are poor, and they insist their daughters to accept contract marriages. As per law, marrying a minor girl and contract marriages are illegal in any place. In this contract marriages, bride and her parents are forced to sign on divorce papers at the time of marriage itself.

To avoid all these special secretary of minority welfare department, Syed Omer Jaleel said that, the government is planning to act tough on contract marriage. “The draft is being prepared in consultation with the police department and law department for bringing in suitable law,” he further said.
