Thangamagan Movie Review

Dhanush’s ‘Thangamagan’ has finally got released today, after all, the pre-release buzz and hype. The success of ‘Maari’ has given Dhanush new hope and this also brings ‘Team VIP’ together. ‘VIP’ fame Velraj directs the movie and it features Samantha and Amy Jackson in female lead roles. On the Technical front, the movie has A.Kumaran for cinematography and M.V.Rajesh Kumar for editing. Anirudh Ravichander handles the musical score. Songs are already topping the charts. ‘Enna Solla’ song, in particular, got more positive reception. K.S.Ravikumar, Radhika Sarathkumar, Jayaprakash, M.S.Bhaskar, Sathish are part of the supporting cast.

Dhanush, as usual, carries the movie on his shoulders. He takes the movie forward. He has shown lots of difference between the two characters. A lot more matured performance. Amy Jackson is the odd one out. On what basis she is roped in? She is absolutely emotionless. She is pretty. But as an actress, she has to travel a long way.

Samantha scores easily, but her own voice is scary. Try to use dubbing next time Samantha. KS Ravikumar and Radhika as parents did a cake walk performance. They are professionals and they knew clearly how to shoulder the movie.

Satish’s one liners are good at spaces. M.S.Bhaskar who is one of the best character artist has been wasted completely. The baddie is also not strong and that is one of the major weakness. Director Velraj himself has done a cameo role.

Cast and Crew

Starring: Dhanush, Samantha, and Amy Jackson
Direction: Velraj
Music: Anirudh Ravichander
Production: Wunderbar Films and Gopuram Films

Storyline in Brief

The movie is basically about a middle-class guy who falls in love with an Anglo-Indian girl during his early stages. However, this love was not accepted by his parents as she is from a different caste and she is also rich. As usual, Love then a failure. (Thankfully no soup song is here!) Then comes transition period. Dhanush becomes a family man. An unexpected incident happens to Dhanush’s father and that impacts their routine life. How Tamizh overcomes all odds forms the rest of the story.

Music

Anirudh who has given some memorable music with ‘3’, ‘VIP’, ‘Maari’ has delivered some poor stuff here. What happened Anirudh? The background score is also not effective. Except ‘Enna Solla’ and ‘Tak Bak’ rest of the songs are not catchy. Anirudh definitely seems to lose momentum. He needs to get back into the game at the earliest. Else he will face some harsh time.

Star Cast Performance

Audience Response

The first half of the movie is pretty good with comedy and the youthful nature. But the second half falls flat and that is where the movie lacked the punch. Despite 121 minutes running time, we feel like watching some melodrama. The snail-paced second half is the biggest minus of the movie. The movie is still watchable for its making and Dhanush’s energetic performance.
