Toyota Motor Corp ties up with Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway human transporting wheelchairs for disabled and old aged people.
Segway develops advanced wheelchairs for disabled people and ageing people worldwide. Toyota Motor Corp has entered into an agreement with Kamen in order to introduce a new version of his iBOT wheelchair. This new introduction will be helpful in moving up and down stairs and help disabled people stand face-to-face while talking. Kamen stopped selling the iBOT in the year 2009.
The alliance agreement between Toyota Motor Corp and Kamen was unveiled at Paralyzed Veterans of America convention in Jacksonville, Florida. The Kamen’s Research and Development is based in Manchester of New Hampshire.
Toyota announced in November last year that it would spend $1 billion as investment initially on a five-year research focused on artificial intelligence and robotics. The scientists at the new Toyota Research Institute are promoting traffic safety and non-automotive goals like elderly mobility. This institute is run by the former top robotics engineer for the US military, Gill Pratt.
In December last year, Gill Pratt introduced Kamen and Nagata to Toyota. Kamen’s Segway PT which was introduced in the year 2001 is a two-wheeled, battery-powered electric vehicle that lets its single standing passenger move forward or backwards by shifting weight in the desired direction. These vehicles stand as the tourist attractions for some of the popular congested downtowns and theme parks.
