Twitter Removes 140 Character Limit on Direct Messages

One of the most popular social networking sites Twitter has confirmed the removal 140 character limit on the private direct messages but it will not removing the limit on public tweets posted on the site.

Twitter is one of the most popular social networking services, where users can send and read short 140-charecters messages called tweets. Now from the beginning of July, the private direct message service in Twitter is free from 140-character limit.

Chief executive Dick Costolo has confirmed that, the character limit on private direct messaging service which is used to send tweets between users is free from 14- characters from the beginning of July month. But it will not be removing the lock on public tweets posted on the site.

The main vision of this attempt is to attract more number of users to the micro-blogging site. The investors of site become frustrated with lack of users growth on the site, the micro blogging site has only 300 million active users, where rival Facebook, one of the most used and popular social network has 1.3 billion active users.

One of the developer Forum, the firm’s Sachin Agarwal posted that “ We’ve done a lot to improve Direct Messages over the past year and have much more exciting work on the horizon. One change coming in July that we want to make you aware of now (and first!) is the removal of the 140 character limit in Direct Messages. You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. Nothing! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today”

Twitter allows only 140 characters for both communication types i.e. for direct messaging and public posting. It makes confusion among the users, they accidentally publicly posting messaging intended to send as privately. Whereas other popular social networking site Facebook has no limits of the number of characters for both public and private messages.
