Onam has a unique story behind its celebrations. The legendary King Mahabali, once ruled the Kerala state, although he is an asura, he is extremely generous, judicious and wise. Kerala state witnessed the golden era in his ruling. There is no difference between Rich and Poor in his kingdom all are treated as same, and there are no crimes, no corruption, and no poverty.
God can’t bear the glowing popularity of King Mahabali and became extremely jealous. They wanted to get rid of King and sought the help of Lord Vishnu.
Whenever anyone approaches Mahabali for help or any request he always granted. Lord Vishnu approaches Mahabali as a Vamana avatar (one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu) and asks for the piece of land that could be covered by his three steps. Generous King agreed to his request.
Vamana began to expand and increase himself to the size of cosmic proportions. Vamana covered the whole earth with his first step and covered the whole sky with his second step. Vamana asked King Mahabali about his third step. King then realizes he is not an ordinary Brahmin, and he bowed before Vamana and asked him to place his third step on his head as he promised. He places his foot on Kings head and pushes him to Patala, the another world. The Vamana revealed his true identity and said King that he came to test him and the King won the test. Mahabali was very pleased to see Lord Vishnu.
The King asked Lord Vishnu that to visit his people once in a year. Lord Vishu was moved by his nobility and grants the wish. The visit of King Mahabali to Kerala is celebrated as Onam.
Every Onam people decorate their house to welcome their most favorite King whom they call Onathappan and Maveli. It is a ten days festival, the first and the lasts days are important days. The Vallamkali is the famous events conducted during Onam.

Pookalam is an arrangement of flowers on the floor. This Pookalam tradition is extremely famous in Kerala, and it has the ritual of decorating their houses during ten days of Onam celebrations. Especially adolescent girls prepare Pookalam to welcome their King.
