The Hyundai Santro was the first product from the South Korean carmaker in India that was launched in 1998. The hatchback proved to be a runaway success for the company and dominated the segment space for 16 years and India discontinued the vehicle in December 2015 at the end of its life cycle.

According to its vendor sources, Hyundai’s South Korean R&D centre is working on a new model which would re-enter the Indian market as the brand’s entry-level hatchback. The new Hyundai Santro model is likely to be priced as low as Rs 4 lakh for the base variant and Rs 6 lakh for the top-end model.

The new model will be based on an all-new platform that will be manufactured locally. The company will share this new platform with the Kia brand. Though the exterior and interior details are yet to be revealed, we expect it to be more up-market and sportier than the old model.

Moving to the engine, the new Hyundai Santro might come either with an 800cc or a 1.0-litre engine. Hyundai will tune the powertrain for achieving better fuel efficiency and performance. The transmission on offer could be a 5-speed manual. Rumor suggests that the 2018 Santo will Hyundai’s first small car to get an AMT gearbox. When launched, the new Santro is expected to compete against the Renault Kwid, Maruti Celerio, and soon-to-be-launched Datsun redi-Go.
