China, June 22: New space antenna proposed by scientists at Harbin Institute of Technology. It can prevent space communication blackouts with spacecrafts entering earth’s atmosphere.

Space communication blackouts can be caused due to many reasons. Recently news came from ISRO India regarding the same for Mangalyaan 15 day blackout. But here the report is bit different. Scientists at Harbin Institute of Technology, China recently proposed a solution to prevent such situations with spacecrafts while entering into Earth’s atmosphere.

It’s a specially designed space antenna, apparently a middle or indirect method of communication with a precise accuracy and signal quality. If successfully implemented, it can be used for a flawless communication in plasma sheath effect.

Describing the after effect, Xiaotian Gao, a physicist at the Harbin Institute of Technology said that, “When a re-entry vehicle is unable to be connected, the only thing you can do is pray for it.” Researchers also said that the same technology can also be adopted for futuristic military planes and ballistic missiles.

This is Why Communication Blackouts Occurs

This is due to plasma sheath effect. It means, while re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, spacecrafts will attend a speed which is about 5 times than that of sound. Then the craft covers with a hot and ionized air call as plasma sheath.

When it occurs, it will literally reflect back and electromagnetic signal which results a communication blackout. In most plasma sheath cases, any form of communication between the craft with outside losses complete creating a horrid situation.

Xiaotian Gao further added regarding space antenna that, “Once the resonance is reached, the energy can be exchanged between them steadily and listlessly, like real capacitance and inductance do in a circuit. As a result, the electromagnetic radiation can propagate through the matched layer and the plasma sheath like they do not exist.”
